to be anounced // Tilen Sepič: Light Oscillator
Kinetic Light and Sound Installation
Tilen Sepič’s kinetic light and sound installation, Light Oscillator consists of one or many light-spheres, suspended from a very long cable, rotating in slow and persistent orbit. Each Spere shines very bright light of two complementary light colours mixing together to create different colour tones as well as white light.
The kinetic light and sound sculpture is inspired by the observation and study of the fundamentals of natural processes that are based on frequencies and vibration. Orbiting motion, sine-wave frequencies, low frequency oscillations can be observed in wide range of systems: from atomic-scale to planetary movement, motion of the universe as well as biological, economic and social oscillations, possibly hidden in our everyday life. Our perceived world consists only of the frequencies that are in the range of human perception.
“Oscillations occur not only in mechanical systems but also in dynamic systems in virtually every area of science: for example the beating human heart, business cycles in economics, predator-prey population cycles in ecology, geothermal geysers in geology, vibrating strings in musical instruments, periodic firing of nerve cells in the brain, and the periodic swelling of Cepheid variable stars in astronomy.” *Wikipedia
Frequencies and oscillations are very closely related with core-production of light and sound, which are the main mediums for expression in this installation. Nothing is pre-recorded, light and sound patterns are both generated on-site with overlapping frequencies.
The installation consists of one or many light-spheres, suspended from a long cable, rotating in slow and persistent orbit with help of the custom built motors. Each sphere shines very bright light of two colours mixing together. Pattern of light interfere with the slow and persistent motion of the light-sphere, creating unpredictable generative patterns. Due to specially designed frequencies of light patterns that triggers various visual adaptations, observer can see extra colors and geometric patterns that are not actually present. Due to direct synchronisation, visitors can see the exact frequency of sound also in light patterns and vice versa.
Observation and exploration of the patterns, frequencies and vibrations, allows visitor to get in the calm meditative mood, and challenges the emotional response.
Tightly synchronized frequencies of light patterns with frequencies of ambient sounds create spacial audio-visual atmosphere that allows visitor to get lost in the meditative state and challenges the emotional response.
Tilen Sepič is a multidisciplinary designer, new media artist and promoter of “open source” culture. His experience with light is manifesting in light-design objects, iot design, product photography and sound-light installations. Currently he is developing a practice on research and development of his own products in fields of light design and sound-light installations.
Tilen’s work focuses on the topic’s fundamentals, exposing its key function, material, technology or cause. Lately he is promoting experience design over material styling with ten years of experience in industrial design and production.
His work in light design objects and installations is currently focused on how the artificial light affects the brain, changing the mood, experience and productivity, the same way natural light does. His passion for playing with sensory inputs gives him the edge to work in interactive design and art installations.
With ongoing research of new media and latest technologies, he is consulting or holding many workshops, currently specialised in “Internet of things” design and open source digital manufacturing systems.
His experiences with light can be also seen in (studio) product photography, motion photography and interactive photography works which are focused on fast evolving web and mobile media. With many blogs and websites, he experiment in viral behavior and alternative publishing of video/photo original content.
Together with Theremidi orchestra group, experimental electronic AV collective, they are active in open source, hacking and DIY fields, exploring the new terrains in electronic music. They performed, exhibited and held workshops at over thirty festivals and exhibitions mostly in Europe e.g. Piksel Festival in Bergen Norway; LiWoLi Festival in Linz, Austria; PoolLoop in Zürich, Switzerland; U3: Triennial of Contemporary Art, Museum of Contemporary Art in Ljubljana, Slovenia; Eyebeam, Brooklyn, NYC, to name just a few.
Decade ago he worked as a designer in product design studio Gigodesign, involved in multiple mass-production objects. Later he co-founded design studio Rompom, when they worked on more sustainable products, small scale productions and interior design. He also established community-based urban bicycle and culture community “Muslauf” and co-founded co-working creative space “Creative Zone Šiška” which was the main boiling point to the next big project Pop-up dom – a temporary shop, exhibition and community space, platform for promoting young Slovenian designers, with exhibitions in Ljubljana, Milan, Venice, Vienna, over last three years. In the fields of rapid manufacturing, open source and education he co-founded “Poligon Maker Lab”. He is also running a photo studio, specialised in tabletop product photography and videography.
